Teaching Science with Real-World Experiences

Spring Street International School, Friday Harbor, Washington

Sharon Massey, Science Teacher

Sharon Massey, eighth grade science teacher at SSIS, shares her experience working with students to embrace the natural beauty that surrounds them while engaging in real-world work. One example was when her eighth grade science class studied oceanography, which included bathymetry, the study of underwater topography. One of the questions with which they began the unit was: How do scientists map the ocean floor? Her students embarked on an authentic project where they learned about measuring grids and high- and low-resolution maps by making models of the seafloor in cardboard boxes.

The project became more meaningful when the class decided to take the skills they learned in the classroom out to a local pond. Using a boat and a weighted line, students begin measuring depth at key points in the pond, directed by team members on the shore. The students recorded the depths and used the data to create a bathymetry map of the pond—uncharted waters as the class was thrilled to discover. The results are shown in Figure 5.4.
